‘We Are Certain That The E-Levy Will Have No Negative Consequences For Ghanaians’ – Ursula Owusu

Ghana’s Communications and Digitalization minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has made it known that the government is certain that the controversial E-levy that has been proposed will not have any negative influence on Ghanaians.

The member of parliament of constituents in the Ablekuma West constituency made this known in a recent submission.

In her submission, she said;

“According to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, 61 percent of samples from Africa show that internet sales were effective during the Covid-19.

In Ghana, the digital platform has surpassed paper as the primary means of conducting business. Covid-19 was the catalyst for the digital platform in the year 2020.

Our tax-to-GDP ratio is 12.2 percent, which is among the lowest in Sub-Saharan Africa. We need to fund our own development rather than relying on handouts from other countries.

E-levy, at a rate of 1.75 percent, has been introduced as Ghana’s lowest rate of any tax. Digital taxes have been introduced in other countries at rates of up to 10%, and we travel there to seek loans for our development and to borrow.

Based on our expertise and lessons learned from other nations, we are certain that the e-levy will have no negative consequences for Ghanaians. I implore the minority to work with the government to get this e-levy passed.”
