Start Your Own Business; Gov’t Payroll Is Full – Ofori Atta Tells UPSA Fresh Graduates

The Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori Attah has advised fresh graduates from the University of Professional Studies-Accra (UPSA) to start their own business.

According to the finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, the government’s payroll is full and will not be able to sustain fresh graduates into the public sector. He said that it will keep adding to the unemployment figures in the public sector.

Mr. Ofori-Atta said that the government is sending about 60 percent of its revenue on reimbursing about 650,000 people. In a report filed by Ghanaweb.com. Ofori Atta said it is the role and job of the government to create the needed enabling environment, establish micro-stability and ensure that citizens have the right skillset.

“….most people look for a job from government or state institutions, but that payroll is full. I can tell you that because we are spending about 60 percent of our revenue on remunerating some 650,000 people and that is not sustainable” he said.

The finance minister further added that entrepreneurship, skillset, and credit are the most important things a person needs in the mix to ensure sustainability for the youth and offer the youth the opportunity to create their own path to making wealth for themselves.

Concluding his speech, he stated that education is a ladder to social mobility as well as economic and social prosperity, which will in turn help the society as a whole.
