“Anti-terrorist operation in Cambrils: jihadist indoctrinator addicted to Daesh propaganda arrested,” translated from “Operació antiterrorista a Cambrils: detingut un adoctrinador gihadista addicte a la propaganda del Daesh,” El Caso, December 3, 2021 (thanks to K.):

New anti-terrorist operation in Catalonia. The National Police have arrested this week in Cambrils (Baix Camp) a strongly radicalized young man of Moroccan nationality who was also engaged in indoctrinating new followers of terrorist groups such as Daesh. Following his arrest, the Central Court of Instruction of the National High Court has ordered his imprisonment.

According to information obtained by the General Information Commissioner (CGI) of the National Police, the Spanish police brigade in charge of the fight against terrorism, the young man, who lived in a farmhouse in Cambrils, in the Baix Camp, has been a consumer of jihadist content for more than two years. Investigators have been able to discover that the man was consuming a wide range of videos and jihadist material, from those preparing for the attacks to others of extreme cruelty where Daesh-led executions were viewed.

Pulling the thread of a 2020 terrorist operation

The investigation into the arrest of this Moroccan man began after an investigation was carried out in May 2020, when police arrested two people in Bolaños de Calatrava (Ciudad Real) for terrorist indoctrination. As a result of that operation, a man was detected who, from Cambrils, without maintaining too much social contact with other people, followed the same guidelines as the detainees and who was engaged in attracting, via the Internet, new followers for the Daesh terrorist organization.

Jihadist propaganda

The arrested man had almost no contact with anyone and always interacted with his followers on social media, from where he spread his propaganda and, at the same time, also consumed clearly terrorist videos. The investigation revealed that the detainee was engaged in intense pro-jihadist activity, including not only continued consumption of terrorist material, but also frequent contact with members of terrorist groups in the Middle East. In addition, the agents noted the virtual relationships he exercised, with the aim of attracting and indoctrinating new followers, making available all kinds of jihadist content.

Despite this indoctrination, it is not clear that the man had any intention or ability to carry out any specific terrorist action, although it is true that the counter-terrorism forces always keep an eye on these profiles because of their volatility and possibility, with few resources, to act. Most of these terrorists, without the support of organized groups located in the area, can carry out solitary attacks such as stabbings or assaults.

The prison

This operation has had the collaboration of the National Intelligence Center (CNI), the Directorate General of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) of Morocco and the Mossos d’Esquadra, according to the National Police in a note press this Friday. Today, the man has been handed over to the head of the Central Court of Instruction Number Two, who has ordered his entry into prison.
