The suspect was arrested last week Wednesday in Northgate Mall in Roodepoort, Gauteng, was arraigned before the Stellenbosch Magistrate’s Court on Monday, July 25, on charges of fraud and money laundering.

According to IOL, he pretended to be an American engineer named Larry Cole. Esosa made up a story about why he needed money after establishing a relationship which led the victim to later pay R2 million over a six-month period.

The suspect was the subject of a multidisciplinary investigation led by Captain Bernard Adams of the Stellenbosch Detective division, John Alexander, lead investigator at Royal Investigations, and Sergeant Allister Marajh of the Stellenbosch Vispol division, according to the report.

Mr. Alexander, the lead investigator also added that the suspect tried bribing the police with R500 000.00 after they arrested him. The police then discovered a BMW car key in his possession and again the suspect tried manipulating them for his release by offering the car to them.

Unfortunately his offer was rejected by the policemen. He also failed to provide a sensible explanation for how he came to own such an expensive vehicle. The vehicle was seized and subjected to further investigation.

The investigator also added that the suspect is part of an organized crime group targeting vulnerable women who are simply looking for companionship, adding that they have been living extravagantly with the gains they make from their crimes.
