Good afternoon Mr Doctor. Thank you for all you do in the NIGERIAN HEALTH BLOG… I am a known hypertensive, diagnosed years ago and on BP drugs like amlodipine 10mg and Lisinopril 10mg. I don’t take alcohol at all since I was diagnosed. I love palm wine though, please doctor, I want to know if palm wine is good for patients with high blood pressure.

My reply:

Palm wine is very rich in potassium. Taking moderate amount of palm wine is actually good for the heart and it helps lowers high blood pressure and even lowers blood cholesterol. Palm wine does not interfere with BP medications and so hypertensives who take palmwine have nothing to worry about in terms of drug interactions.

Palm wine can be taken by hypertensive patients because it is good for them but take it with moderation because palmwine is an alcoholic drink.

What is hypertension?

-Hypertension is defined as blood pressure above 140/90, and is considered severe if the pressure is above 180/120.

Symptoms of hypertension

High blood pressure often has no symptoms.
In some cases, people with high blood pressure may have a pounding feeling in their head or chest, a feeling of lightheadedness or dizziness.
