The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA has hailed the Lagos State Government for the indefinite suspension of Dowen College , following the death of 12-year-old student, Sylvester Oromoni Junior.
HURIWA recalled that a 12-year-old boy, Sylvester Oromoni, Jr, was allegedly beaten to death in Dowen college after he refused to join a cult.
A Twitter user identified as Perrie (@perrisonoromoni) on took to the platform to explain how the victim whom he claimed to be the cousin was molested.
He wrote: “This is my 12-years-old cousin that was beaten to death at a school that cost over 1 million naira,” Perrie posted on Twitter, attaching the tweet with the photo of the deceased.
“They called my uncle saying he got injured playing football. Reaching the hospital, it was confirmed that he was being bullied and beaten up causing internal damages. They tried to put him in a cult, he refused and they killed him. [In a] secondary school. They literally beat him to death,”
In a statement released by HURIWA, they called on the relevant stakeholders to come together and get to the bottom of the situation.
The statement read: “We call on the honourable Attorney General of the Federation, the ministers of Education, Lagos State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Education to intervene in the alleged gruesome murder of 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni Junior by suspected student cultists in Dowen college, who died after an alleged encounter with some of his Co-students.
“The Federal and Lagos State’s administrations need to do this by activating transparent, open and credible mechanisms to probe the remote, immediate circumstantial and factual reasons for the death of the innocent student.
“The governments need to do this to assure the citizens and the World that school children are guaranteed their Human Rights and are protected from unwarranted bullying, torture, physical assaults, rape and murder by either their fellow students or management staff”.
