Islamic law forbids a non-Muslim man to marry a Muslim woman, although a non-Muslim woman may marry a Muslim man. Because the law assumes that a woman will join her husband’s household, this law is designed to ensure that the Islamic community is always increasing in size, while non-Muslim communities are declining.

Zinedine S. has been on trial since Monday for attempted murder in the Assize Court. He did not support the romantic relationship of his sister, Inès, with Sébastien, whom he allegedly assaulted one evening in February 2020 in Colombes, because he was non-Muslim, according to witnesses. Questioned, Sébastien minimized the facts, claiming a “fuzzy” memory, under pressure.
It was the eve of Valentine’s Day, in 2020. Inès and Sébastien, two young people from Colombes (Hauts-de-Seine), in the middle of a love story, were counting on celebrating the feast of lovers. But Inès’s brother, who viewed his sister’s relationship very negatively, wouldn’t allow it. On February 13, he stabbed Sébastien, and now finds himself before the Hauts-de-Seine Assize Court, where he has been on trial since Monday and until Wednesday for attempted murder.
