The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed that the ban on Twitter in Nigeria has been lifted.

The ban will be lifted from midnight (Thursday, January 13) and this comes after the popular micro-blogging platform agreed to open an office in Nigeria.

This was made known by a senior government official said on Wednesday, January 12. The government of Nigeria banned the platform on June 4, 2021, and this came about after the platform removed a post from President Muhammadu Buhari that threatened bandits in Nigeria.

Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi who is the director-general of the National Information Technology Development Agency made this known in a statement that reads;

“Twitter has agreed to act with a respectful acknowledgment of Nigerian laws and the national culture and history on which such legislation has been built… to develop a Code of Conduct in line with global best practices, applicable in almost all developed countries.

Therefore, the (federal government) lifts the suspension of the Twitter operations in Nigeria from midnight of 13th January 2022.”
