My latest book, Who Lost Afghanistan?, is a brief but comprehensive look at the U.S. debacle in Afghanistan, showing how the Afghan incursion was wrongly conceived, wrongly executed, and wrongly ended. It is 20 years of failure explained, and illustrates how the foreign policy establishment’s false assumptions and wrongheaded approach doomed the U.S. endeavor from the beginning. Yet that same foreign policy establishment, with its lengthy record of multiple failures, is still very much in place.

“Bush concluded with a ringing peroration: ‘The battle is now joined on many fronts. We will not waver; we will not tire; we will not falter; and we will not fail. Peace and freedom will prevail. Thank you. May God continue to bless America.’”

“And yet we did waver. We did tire. We did falter. We did fail. Peace and freedom did not prevail. Once the whole thing was done, in an entirely transformed political landscape, even whether God would continue to bless America was not fully clear.”

So writes Robert Spencer in Who Lost Afghanistan?, a poignant look at how the refusal to take seriously the motivations of America’s enemies in the Global War on Terror set off a 20-year slow motion defeat that will impact U.S. national security for decades to come.
